Team Soars at State Championships: Gymnasts Win 13 Individual State Titles – Level 4 and Level 7 Teams Place 2nd

The Axis Gymnastics Team finished the competitive season on a high note at the Wyoming State Championships in Rock Springs this weekend. The team’s hard work paid off with numerous podium finishes, including ten individual event state titles in Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise and three All Around State Champions. All nine of the Axis gymnasts placed in the top six All Around for the State, and most took home at least one medal. The Level 4 and the Level 7 gymnasts both placed second as a team.

“I’m truly impressed by how much each of our girls has improved this season,” stated Coach Jeff Lutz. “Their dedication and commitment really showed today with tremendous results.” Coach Alex Bontecou added, “As a coach, it’s wonderful to see the accomplishments of our team girls recognized at the state level.”

The Wyoming State Championship scores and places for each Axis Gymnastics team member are below. The team score is based upon the total of the top three scores in each event in any given level.

Axis Gymnasts Prepare for State Championships – Back to Back Meets Show Ongoing Improvement

With the Wyoming State Gymnastics Championships in just two weeks, the Axis Gymnastics team is training hard to polish and strengthen their routines as they approach the end of the competitive season. Back-to-back meets — last weekend in Park City at the Black Diamond Gymnastics Winter Classic and this weekend at the Boise State University Open — presented the gymnasts with challenging competition from regional and national teams. While every team member was finally able to compete in all four events at the Winter Classic, many of the girls unfortunately missed the Boise meet due to illness. Every team member has qualified to compete in the State Championships.

“Competing in invitational meets with teams from across the United States, like these last two meets, exposes our gymnasts to a high level of competition and helps them grow as athletes,” stated Coach Alex Bontecou. “We still have some work to do before the State Championships, but everyone has made tremendous progress this season. Overall, our scores are going up with every meet,” added Coach Jeff Lutz. The competitive season culminates on March 16th in Rock Springs at the Wyoming State Championships.

Gymnasts Take Gold at USU Invitational-Level 4 Team Tops Podium in Logan

On the heels of a challenging meet in Boise two weeks ago, the Axis Gymnastics team came back strong, with the Level 4 gymnasts bringing home a first place team trophy this weekend. Nicole Lohn, a new team member this year, also earned her first individual all-around gold medal. Recent hard practice showed, with almost every girl posting an improved all-around score and a top 3 finish at the Utah State Invitational, hosted by AirBound Gymnastics in Logan, Utah.

“I’m really happy with how our team performed at this meet,” commented Coach Jeff Lutz. “It gives our athletes a good base from which to further strengthen their skills and refine technique before the next meet.” Axis hopes to have the entire team healthy enough by then to compete in all events. While at the meet, the gymnasts were also able to watch the Utah State University women’s gymnastics team beat Air Force, a great recreational opportunity to see NCAA gymnasts in action.
